"I was glad when they said to me,
'Let us go into the house of the Lord.' "
Why Build a Chapel? Regular Sunday worship services must be conducted early enough so they don't interfere with family visitation. This creates hardship on volunteers who drive one to three hours each way to minister here. And only the most committed inmates attend the 8:00 a.m. worship service. The visiting room, where worship services are held, will accommodate about 100 people for worship. Periodically, attendance has reached into the eighties, then declined when those attending feel crowded. Seating capacity for weekend conferences is limited to about 50. The visiting area is surrounded by tile, concrete, glass and fiberglass The present chaplain's office is roughly 18' x 24' and accommodates two inmate clerks who check out books, distribute tracts, greeting cards, and other donated items for an almost continuous stream of inquirers. Office dividers in a corner of the office provide only minimal privacy for the chaplain in dealing with an unceasing procession of men seeking assistance. There is no quiet place available for Bible study, prayer, or similar needs. Although we have a TV and VCR, and a variety of excellent Christian videotapes, no more than two or three person can view at any given time and volunteers must keep quiet to not distract from other activities in the office.
